February Lunch & Learn - Macro Photography

Today's lunch & learn meeting was presented by Craig Madsen & Jon Laqua who gave a very practical overview of macro photography.  Craig presented the basics of what you need to know about macro photography and his presentation can be viewed here.

5 basic tips:
  1. Use a tripod - movement is more problematic when the magnification is increased
  2. Don't use auto focus
  3. Use fast shutter speeds to reduce movement (1/200+)
  4. Simplify image - close-up, filled frame, etc
  5. Be aware of the background - will be blurred but should be minimized as much as possible
Jon brought in some of his gear and explained how to use macro lenses, extension tubes, tripods, black velvet for the background, various diffusers and other helpful gadgets.

Reminder that there will be a macro photography workshop in the D4 Special Events room this Saturday, February 18 from 9:00 a.m. on.  Bring all your gear, including tripods and flashes, and if desired, bring items to shoot.  There will be setups and help available.  Photos will be eligible for the macro topic salon in March.
